Green had bad days. Red had bad days of his own as well. Usually, this wasn’t too much of a problem. Joined at the hip as they were, they had ended up developing their routines around each other; if one was out of commission, the other would take over, and vice-versa.
Today, the one out of commission was, as it more often happened, Green. He was lying on his back along the length of their couch, one leg dangling over the edge. On his stomach, Eevee was rolled into a small ball of perfectly-groomed fluff, sleeping without a worry in the world. Lucky her.
He kept his eyes closed, using the back of his right hand to further block out the ambient light. Near him, Red was sitting on the armchair, quietly fiddling with his Pokédex. Green could hear his soft breathing, and the gentle tap-tap-tap of his fingers on the device’s screen.
Arceus, his head was killing him.
He sighed. “Red?” He asked, earning a small grunt in response. “Mind getting me some water? And some aspirin with it?” Another grunt of agreement. “Thanks, you’re an angel .”
He heard Red huff a laugh at the genuine gratefulness in Green’s voice. Red stood up quietly and shuffled his socked feet on the floor on his way around the sofa.
Then Green heard a thunk.
Then silence.
“… Red?” He slowly removed his hand, previously laying over his eyes protectively, and sat up to look over the sofa. Eevee made an offended little yip as he dared wake her up from her slumber, so he gently burrowed his fingers in the fur of her neck and scratched her in her favorite spot, under her chin, as an apology. Squinting through the migraine, he could see that…yep, sure enough, there was Red. Lying down. On the floor, looking like he’d accepted said floor as his new home. Red’s deadpan expression said more than any words ever could.
It said, “ Welp, guess I live here now. ”
“You okay there, buddy?” Green asked with a mixture of concern and amusement. Red just shrugged and continued doing his best impression of a flattened Ditto, expression and all. He chuckled at the image.
“Guess we’re both out today, huh.” He commented idly, still petting the small Pokémon on his lap. “You know, you could have just let me know you weren’t feeling that good.” He gently admonished Red. Red had the decency to be sheepish about it.
It had always been a bad habit of his. He was usually better off than Green, and had gotten used to do stuff for him on bad days. But because of that, he had the unfortunate tendency to…ignore his own health. If Red’s feisty and protective Pikachu hadn’t currently been playing in the yard with the others, Green had no doubt that the yellow demon would be squeaking Red’s ears off for letting it get this bad in the first place.
Oh well, what’s done is done. Green slowly laid back down on the couch, looking at his Eevee. “Well, that’s how it is. Could you go and get me Alakazam’s ball, princess?”
Eevee pouted at having to do an errand , little spoiled thing as she was, but ultimately accepted. She walked up his chest to lick the tip of his nose, then gracefully jumped off the sofa. As she trotted towards the bedroom, she stopped by Red and gave him a lick too, for good measure, a small expression of her concern.
Later on, as they were both being taken care of by Green’s slightly peeved yet resigned Alakazam, Green couldn’t help but think they were oddly well-suited for each other. Terrible health and bad habits included.
Green had bad days. Red had bad days of his own as well. And, sometimes, those days just so happened to overlap. Even so, they were happy with each other. “In sickness and in health”, as they said.
