Summary: Izaya was the one to originally come up with the idea.
He had called Shizuo on his phone one day (which was annoying enough, considering he never gave the annoying flea his number) and simply said, without even saying hello :
“Hey, wanna fuck with Shinra for a bit?”
And the next thing he knew, he and Izaya were pretending to be madly in love with each other.

Izaya was the one to originally come up with the idea.
He had called Shizuo on his phone one day (which was annoying enough, considering he never gave the annoying flea his number) and simply said, without even saying hello :
“Hey, wanna fuck with Shinra for a bit?”
And Shizuo, for some fucking reason, had said yes.
Maybe he should have asked for more details first, because the next thing he knew, he and Izaya were pretending to be madly in love with each other, effectively rejecting every one of Shinra’s offers to hang out after school.
“Sorry, I’m hanging out with Izaya this weekend.”
“My bad, I’m taking Shizu-chan to the arcade today!”
“There’s a couple’s special down the street. I’ll pass.”
“Yeah, I’m spending Golden Week with Shizu-chan, you see…”
And so on, and so on.
They would ditch him any moment they could, pulling various practical jokes and pranks on him whenever the opportunity presented itself.
Shinra, as expected, had become whiny.
“You two never spend any time with me anymore, it’s like I’m effectively friendless again! Maybe introducing you two was a mistake…”
Shizuo, admittedly, found it hilarious.
So they kept going, even actually spending some time together when they realized they got along surprisingly well when faced with a common goal : annoying Shinra.
He doesn’t know exactly when things started changing. Maybe they had changed the moment Izaya had given him that fateful call, maybe it was when they pulled their first common prank on their despairing friend.
Maybe it was when they started going on actual, non-pretend dates.
Eventually, they’d started ditching Shinra less, mostly out of sympathy for him because there was no way in hell he would manage to get himself new friends, what with his off-putting personality.
The dates continued, however.
(And the pranks too, of course.)
Years down the line, Shizuo decided to stop thinking about it when he one day found himself ring shopping.
He was always more of a “don’t think, feel” kinda guy anyway.
