Maybe, Shinra thought in hindsight after seeing his two friends take off in a much deadlier game of tag than normal, introducing Shizuo and Izaya at that time hadn’t been his brightest idea. Twenty missed calls and a hundred unread messages later, he still wasn’t completely convinced his friends were still alive.

Of course, despite their respective temperaments, he knew neither of them were murderers. He knew, not-so-deep-down, that they’d most probably be fine. He still worried the tiniest bit about the injuries he knew they would have by the end, though. Neither of his friends had any sense of preservation whatsoever, Izaya because of lack of care for his own safety, and Shizuo because he straight up didn’t notice.

As the sun was beginning to set, he made a decision : he would ask his dearest Celty to drive him to Izaya’s to check up on him—

Two short beeps, indicating the arrival of a new message, shook him out of his determined thoughts.

[ORIHARA-KUN : I’m blocking your number.]

Shinra then proceeded to flood Izaya’s phone with numerous more messages asking about his health, but no answer ever came. Knowing him, Izaya had probably turned off his phone as soon as he sent his reply. He still was curious about what had ended up happening, but decided that Izaya sounded alive enough, and so he had no immediate need to storm his house

In other words : more time with Celty!

In some stroke of good fortune, and due to circumstances Shinra had yet to understand, Shizuo and Izaya had ended up getting along just fine. Maybe they got along too well, he decided when they ganged up on him for the third time that day. It was almost scary how alike those two were, although Shinra could only blame himself for that. After all, it was for that very reason he had decided to introduce them in the first place.

Of course, two already unpredictable forces of nature getting along meant more interesting things would happen.

Case in point : the current situation.

When he reached the roof for lunch break, Shinra had expected the two menaces already sitting together, either comfortably existing in the same space in silence, or doing more of that borderline dangerous play-fighting that was so unique to the pair.

He had certainly not expected to see Izaya casually sitting in Shizuo’s lap, reading another one of his more difficult books while Shizuo’s head was propped on his shoulder and his arms were gently holding Izaya’s smaller waist. They both looked completely at ease in this quite intimate position, Izaya calmly enjoying his book and Shizuo looking close to falling asleep right there. Shinra’s eyes lit up with excitement.

“Well, well, what’s this?” He came up to the two boys with a wide smile. “I certainly wasn’t expecting this!”

“Shut up Shinra, I’m trying to read here.” Izaya commented, not even bothering to look at him.

Shinra didn’t care and went to sit next to the hugging pair. “No way, you gotta tell me how this happened! You’re together right? When’d that happen? How’d that happen? Is this recent?”

“Shinra.” Shizuo’s gruff voice interrupted Shinra in his ramblings. One of his hands released Izaya’s waist to beckon Shinra closer.

“Oh, oh! A secret? I’m all ears!” Shinra immediately crawled closer.

… And was swiftly flicked in the forehead.

And that had been that. No grand reveal, no dramatic retelling of how Shizuo had asked Izaya out, and still no explanation. But whatever the reason, Shinra was happy they had found each other. After all, he had tried to get his two friends to get along, and while he had originally only hoped for the two to be friends, them being a couple was just as well.

Author's note: I've been neglecting this series, so here's a small thing to get myself back in. =)
